The AAAS, founded in 1848, is the world’s largest general scientific society. The tradition of electing AAAS fellows began in 1874 to recognize members for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.

Chetelat is a geneticist and director of the C.M. Rick Tomato Genetics Resource Center in the Department of Plant Sciences. He is recognized for his distinguished contributions to the field of plant genetics and germplasm resources, particularly the study of self- and interspecific incompatibility in tomato (Solanum) species. His current research focuses on the genetics and evolution of pollen-pistil incompatibility, and on overcoming breeding barriers between tomato and its wild relatives.
