Three New Faculty Join the Department of Plant Sciences, UC Davis – Christine Diepenbrock, Amanda Crump, and Jagdish Kumar Ladha

Meet three faculty who recently joined the Department of Plant Sciences. They cover a broad range of research, teaching, and outreach expertise. Additional faculty recruitments in the department are underway, and will be posted once those new faculty join the department.

Christine Diepenbrock

Christine Diepenbrock has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences. She focuses on understanding and improving the nutritional quality of food staple crops, such as maize and sorghum, and specialty crops. She is a plant breeder who helps to integrate biochemistry and physiology into breeding decisions, in a routine and cost-effective manner that is also specific to each genotype (parent or varietal candidate).

She is also interested in models from planting to postharvest that consider productivity, agronomics, and nutritional quality, including under conditions of abiotic stress.

Christine Diepenbrock received a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Cornell University, and a B.A. in Biology (Molecular Biology and Biochemistry) at Washington University in St. Louis.

Amanda Crump

Amanda Crump has been appointed as a Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment in the Department of Plant Sciences. She is a lecturer and researcher in international agricultural development. She has over ten years of university teaching experience and currently teaches courses for undergraduate and graduate students in international agricultural development theory and practice, program management and evaluation, and social change.

Her research focuses on improving educational outcomes for women and other underserved adults with the aim of improving food security and nutritional status. Crump has managed over $40 million in international and domestic agricultural research projects and is the lead UC Davis investigator on the USAID Advancing Nutrition project; a $5 million effort to reduce malnutrition globally.

Amanda Crump earned a Ph.D. in Education from University of California, Davis, an M.S. degree in Plant Pathology and Weed Science from Colorado State University, and a B.S. in Agricultural Education from the University of Idaho.

Jagdish Kumar (“JK”) Ladha

JK Ladha has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences. He is a soil microbiologist and agronomist with more than 35 years of experience in sustainable management of agriculture and natural resources for increasing food security and environmental quality. He focuses on optimizing nitrogen use, as required for crop production, while minimizing its negative impacts.

Globally important cereal crops on which he works are maize, rice, and wheat. He also works on long-term experiments related to crop productivity, soil nitrogen and carbon stocks, and conservation agriculture in South Asia.

JK Ladha received a Ph.D. in Botany from Banaras H University, and an M.S. degree in Botany from Jiwaji University.
