Blumwald named “Highly Cited Researcher” six years running

For the sixth year in a row, Department of Plant Sciences faculty Eduardo Blumwald has been named a Highly Cited Researcher by an international database of scientific journals. Blumwald, a plant biologist, is among 10 UC Davis researchers to receive the distinction for 2022.

Published papers on which Blumwald was an author have been cited more than 19,600 times in more than 13,400 articles by other scientists, published in 219 professional journals since 1982. In 2020 alone, Blumwald’s works were referenced nearly 1,900 times, according to Web of Science data.

"It is very rewarding to know that our work contributes to our colleagues’ research,” said Blumwald, a distinguished professor and Will W. Lester Endowed Chair.

Blumwald’s current projects include how plants respond to environmental stress, nitrogen fixation in cereal grains, improving biomass production in poplars, plant water management and investigating the bases of fruit quality.

In addition, he teaches courses in plant biotechnology, heads student labs in plant science and works with the Plant Biology Graduate Group, an inter-departmental structure offering graduate students a multidisciplinary experience.

Web of Science, previously known as Web of Knowledge, is a database of bibliographic citations that tracks references in medical, scientific, social sciences and humanities journals. The announcement came from Clarivate, an analytical information platform that operates Web of Science. Citation counts represent how often a paper has been referenced in other scientific publications, and papers by “highly cited” researchers “rank in the top 1 percent by citations for a field or fields and publication year,” Clarivate announced.
