Research interests and expertise:
I have both research and outreach/extension responsibilities. My research program is broad ó covering nutrient cycling/management, yield gap analysis, cropping systems, air quality, water quality, and water use in rice systems. My extension efforts are closely linked with my research program and focus on developing and improving nutrient management practices that improve nutrient use efficiency, are economical, and result in minimal off-site pollution.
In addition, my outreach also extends to legislative and policy makers. This is especially related to various environmental concerns that I address which are pertinent to rice systems. Some examples are water use in rice systems, concerns of water quality (dissolved organic carbon and other nutrients) in water leaving rice fields, NO3 leaching and greenhouse gas emissions. I also work closely with the extension personnel and frequently give presentations to grower and PCA groups and others (policymaker and regulators) associated with the rice industry. I have also developed and maintain a web-based platform (Research and Information Center) to disseminate information to stakeholders in an appropriate and timely fashion. While much of my research is in California, I have collaborative research in Arkansas, Italy, Spain, and Indonesia.
Current projects:
- Improving nutrient management in California rice systems
- Quantifying and mitigating nitrogen losses from rice systems
- Quantifying and mitigating GHG emissions from rice systems
- Reducing arsenic and methyl mercury in flooded rice systems
- Improving water quality in rice systems
- Understanding rice field hydrology
- Reducing water use in rice systems
- Evaluating varieties for California rice systems
Outreach and Extension:
- Maintain an active website geared towards outreach
- Regularly conduct meetings with grower and PCA groups related to management of nutrients and water in rice systems
- Develop and present workshops for various stakeholders in the rice industry
- Active in applied research to address immediate needs of the rice industry
- Regularly meet with various regulatory and legislative agencies to consult on various issues related to rice production. These include the California Rice Commission, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Delta Tributaries Mercury Council.
